Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay instantly fell in love when she showed her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to utilize art as a method of expression. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. As in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a new publicist at a studio. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
